Are you a qualified Twit?

Since its official launch in March 2006, Twitter has acquired over 500 million users worldwide and is estimated to be worth over $10 billion. There are over 200 million regular monthly Twits twittering on Twitter with an average of 208 followers each. The country that boasts the most users, or Twits, is China with 35.5 million.

A common misconception with this social media platform is that the average Twit is a teenager, a Hollywood movie star or international singer like Justin Bieber (the Twit with the most followers, at 40 million). Nothing could be further from the truth. Surprisingly, this platform is the optimal social media choice for high ranking executives, including all of Fortune’s top 500 executives.

Why is this platform so popular?

First, each Tweet, or information snippet, cannot exceed 140 characters, but can include a picture, video or presentation. This is perfect for most executives or high ranking managers who don’t have much time to read news feeds, but want to stay in touch with other executives, follow market trends of their respective industry/competitors, and world news in general. And, nothing travels faster around the world than a Tweet!

Did you know that:

  • Average Twit is usually a white collar professional with an average household income of $90,000 -$100,000 US;
  • 60% of Twits are male;
  • Average age is between 35 – 50 years;
  • Average Twit spends 170 minutes per month, following postings and engaging with other users;
  • Twits activity level increases by 17% on Saturday and Sunday, while only 19% of Tweets are posted on the weekend. The perfect opportunity to catch decision makers’ attention! AND,
  • Twitter, because of its high volume of interactions, can improve your Google ranking the most of all social media platforms.

Successful ways to Tweet

The best way to reach your target audience is to have a well organized marketing plan. Start with a 12 month calendar. Create a theme for each month around a product or service offering. Then write one post weekly on your blog or web site. Link each post to your Twitter account to drive traffic to your site and to attract followers. Retrospectively, follow people or companies in your target market and slowly engage with different users. Before you know it, you will gain followers that you can connect with and convert into clients. Remember, quality is more important than quantity. You want to be able to connect with your audience and share valuable insights; otherwise you will lose them. And, don’t forget to thank your new followers!
