To create relationships you need to invest time. Take 10-15 minutes daily to interact on Twitter in real time with other Twitters. To be most effective, consider the following:

  1. Create a Twitter button on your website and link it to your blog posts. It will make it easier for your readers to share your tweets and spread the love.
  2. Include a link to your Twitter profile at the end of your e-mail/Gmail signature. This will create great visibility and encourage your clients to become followers.
  3. Break up the business information stream and include some moments from your real life. People will get to know you better. And, you may gain new followers who connect to you on a personal level.
  4. Use an automated program like Hootsuite wisely to schedule and monitor your tweets. Don’t send them all out at once. This ensures that people in a variety of time zones will see your content at various times, and it also helps you seem more real.
  5. Use #hashtags in your profile and tweets – but use them sparingly. 1 or 2 is all you want to use, otherwise, it just looks like spam.
  6. Learn when to tweet for maximum effectiveness. Look at your account and see when you receive the most engagement with your posts. Don’t make assumptions- analyse the numbers!
  7. Don’t just send links to your own site. Twitter is a great way to drive traffic to your site, but it’s not the only way you should be using it. Help promote others and send clients their way. You never know when someone may do the same for you!
  8. Join some groups. Twitter chats are a great way to meet new people and prospective clients!
  9. Don’t assume more followers are better. Quality leads become quality clients.
  10. Go through your Twitter followers regularly (i.e. ManageFlitter) and stop following people who haven’t Tweeted in over a month. They’ll add nothing to your Twitter experience and can clog up your account.
  11. Always provide amazing value in your tweets! Interact with your users around 80-90% of the time and promoting yourself no more than 10-20% of the time.
